The problem is solved, my Joomla installation is running fine. To wrap things up on my end...
I should have been more careful when I checked for replies. I missed one from ceford. I made those changes to php.ini, then I renamed autoload_psr4.php and refreshed Joomla. That did the trick. For the record, the original file clocked in at 96 lines, the new file is roughly three times as large. I'll bet that was the problem.
No need to be gentle. I know who su is and what suexec means. As for permissions and ownership, well, that's Linux 101. My web-facing servers run behind a firewalled dmz. I'd rather not put my stuff on someone else's hardware, virtual or otherwise.
In my past life I groped around in jet fighters, F-4 and F-16 avionics for 20 years. Good times. That's where I learned the importance of clear guidance when troubleshooting.
And finally, a note to whoever wrote fpa-en.php. That's the finest diagnostic tool I've used in fifteen years of fiddling with software. It produces clear, comprehensive insight into your product and the environment it's running in. Whoever put that together deserves a pay raise. In my opinion it should be the benchmark for such stuff.
Thanks again for your patience and help, I greatly appreciate it.
